A one-of-a-kind concept described as 21st Century Folk Art-Textile Sculptures, I call The Folks Edgy Collection. These odd-shaped disproportionate fabric doll bodies were found in a junk store, most were headless and armless, and this was part of the intrigue for me. So, I continued with Imaginative twists.

These upcycled transformed Art Dolls, with their natural freeform shapes, reference feminism, and diversity, telling a much different story than that of the doll’s original early 20th-century purpose, which was to entertain young girls during the Victorian area.

Each Doll is Unique

Recently my focus has turned to a one-of-a-kind concept I describe as 21st Century Folk Art-Textile Sculptures; I call The Folks Edgy Collection.  These odd-shaped disproportionate fabric doll bodies were found in a junk store, most were headless and armless, which was part of the intrigue for me. So I continued with Imaginative twists.

These unusual transformed Art Dolls with their natural freeform shapes, references feminism and diversity, telling a much different story than that of the dolls’ original early 20th-century purpose, which was to entertain young girls during the Victorian area.

I pay little attention to the Traditional Function of materials and like to tweak things to create an effect with the purpose to amuse and enthuse.

I slowly make these textile sculptures.  Hand sewing can be powerful as it allows me the time and space to work intuitively, it is not all planned ahead.

I work in a collage-type assemblance mindset, upcycling items from my own personal unique collection of trinkets & textiles amassed throughout my fun travels and life adventures.

I string the piece along without a definite plan thus allowing me to be free to shake it up and reinterpret the associations between materiality of the physical trinkets we collect throughout our lives and the lingering energy in our memories and experiences with them.

Red

Red in the 1890’s, another lifetime ago, danced the Cancan in the original French Bohemian Paris nightlife, the feminists then were called the unruly girls and the artists… yes she knew Toulouse- Lautrec.

Señorita Gato Espíritu de Libre

Señorita de Libre’s inspiration & form was conceived partly from the short-haired Asian Cat with its extra-large ears, triangular head, almond-shaped eyes, unusually large front paws, and elongated body. She was mostly slow stitched in San Miguel de Allende and a bit in Venice Ca.

COV-IE

COV-IE is composed of a turn of the century leather covered doll body from Germany. When I found her, she did not have a head nor arms. The original made in Germany label is left on her front chest. The lower legs are covered in a cotton muslin, and the the rest is leather covered. Her legs are a bit uneven, but I love that about her. Her little cotton feet are slow stitched with Black darning thread.

Goldie

Goldie is made up of Vintage Kantha Scraps and a washed textual Linen and a Vintage time-worn, stains and all, twill fabric doll body. The slow stitching is done with Cotton embroidery threads in Gold, Fuchsia, and White as well as some Black darning thread. The eyes are appliqued Kantha scraps.

Bohemian Fleur

Fleur is insightful, unconventual and artsy. She stays above it all, she has seen much and has figured out how to create and live life on her own terms and is focused on the arts; Living an artful life. She fits the environment to herself not conforming to what others might consider the right way to be or do.

Ms. Tonto-rina Bravefeather

She is Strong, Bold, Vibrant, and Proud. Basically, a Warrior of life.

The Righteous not so purr-fect Miss Pussy head

A politically correct textile sculpture complete with a pink pussy hat representing the global movement for women’s rights and human rights.

The Lioness Queen

Her message is Hakuna Matata meaning “everything is okay” or “to help alleviate worry over a person’s problems and move on with life.” which is Swahili, but its meaning has sort of evolved to have various meanings over the years. It is a tenant of the Ubuntu philosophy, which generally refers to behaving well towards others or acting in ways that benefit the community.

Stitched up Annie

Stitched up Annie got her name from a Raggedy Ann concept in that she is greatly
mended and stitched except that she represents a much different meaning than a
Raggedy Ann doll. Her recycled collage style of pieces & parts come from different parts
of the globe.

The Queen of Wonderment (in a ball skirt)

This otherworldly astonishing queen inspires us to imagine ourselves away from earthly standards. To create a universe for yourself that is pleasing at the same time while living with and appreciating others and your contributions and exchanges with all of them globally.

Janice McCarty – Functional Art

Occupying that tenuous space between fine art and the everyday, functional art refers to aesthetic objects that serve utilitarian purposes. The genre is remarkably inclusive: it encompasses everything from furniture and lighting to dishes and even books.
